Comprehensive Eye Exam Q & A

When should I schedule a comprehensive eye exam?

To protect your eye health and ensure high-quality vision, Dr. Ebrahim recommends scheduling comprehensive eye exams once a year. Routine annual visits to D Vision Eyecare allow Dr. Ebrahim the opportunity to identify early warning signs of chronic eye disease. She also provides vision evaluations, so you can get the glasses or contact lenses you need for better vision.

For children, it’s important to schedule annual eye exams starting around four years old. Children do much of their learning visually, and by identifying vision problems that interfere with healthy development, you can reduce risk factors for learning difficulties and delays.

What can I expect during a comprehensive eye exam?

During your initial eye exam, Dr. Ebrahim spends time reviewing your personal and family medical history to identify risk factors, like diabetes and high blood pressure, which may contribute to long-term eye complications.

To assess your vision, Dr. Ebrahim goes through visual acuity tests to determine if you need prescription glasses or contacts or if you need a change to an existing prescription. You can expect other diagnostic tests to evaluate your depth perception and overall eye movements. In young children, Dr. Ebrahim screens for color blindness and uses other age-appropriate tests to evaluate visual acuity.

Using a slit-lamp, Dr. Ebrahim examines the inner structures of your eye under high magnification to identify early warning signs of conditions like cataracts and macular degeneration. Prior to this exam, you may need special eye drops to dilate your eyes and make it easier to assess blood vessels and other eye structures.

To screen for glaucoma, she uses non-contact tonometry to assess the blood pressure levels in your eye.

What happens if I have an underlying eye condition?

If your comprehensive eye exam reveals signs of eye damage or disease, Dr. Ebrahim tailors a treatment plan that focuses on relieving existing symptoms and protecting your long-term eye health.

D Vision Eyecare offers a variety of treatment services for various eye conditions, including diabetic-related eye damage. Dr. Ebrahim customizes treatment to your needs, and through follow-up visits, she continues to monitor your condition to prevent permanent eye damage, blindness, and other complications.

If it’s been longer than a year since your last eye appointment, schedule a comprehensive eye exam at D Vision Eyecare by calling the office or by requesting a consultation online today.
